Programs

LINKS - This program is intended to serve the needs of students who have significant lags/delays in academic areas. Because of their particular learning needs, these students have a specialized program with unique materials commensurate with their social functional level, academic and chronological age. This special program is based on a balance of specialized instruction to meet academic needs and integration to meet social needs and reinforce academic learning.

REACH (Resources in Early Childhood) - This program has been developed for families who have children with special needs, ages two and a half to six years of age. They qualify for Program Unity Funding based on formal assessments that indicate a severe delay in one or more areas. The focus of REACH is to provide an environment in which children can develop their skills to their maximum potential in all areas of development. We work in partnership with families supporting their efforts in developing and reinforcing skills at home.

ECS - Kindergarten is a very vital and integral part of the education of all children. It is important that our children, parents, and teachers work together to make the initial year of schooling positive and successful. We work together with the family and community for the development of the total child.

ELK - ELK stands for Early Literacy in Kindergarten.  All kindergarten classes in Elk Island Public Schools participate in this program.  It is designed to assist young children to acquire skills necessary to be successful readers and writers.   During a nine week period, beginning in March, small group literacy activities are provided weekly by the classroom teacher with the support of a substitute teacher.

ERI - Elk Island supports an Early Reading Intervention (ERI) program in all schools. ERI is a program that provides children who are struggling with reading one-on-one support on a daily basis and are referred by the kindergarden and/or the Grade 1 teacher. Home support is vital as there is a home reading component with the program.

ELA - Is offered for students in Grade 2-5 who are in the regular program but are encountering difficulties with the language arts curriculum. Those students in this class receive language arts instruction in a small group setting with a teacher who is not their homeroom teacher. A trained educational assistant works in conjunction with the ELA teacher. The students are integrated with their "home" class for social studies, science and the complementary courses.

BALANCED LITERACY - All students in Grade 1-3 are involved in Balanced Literacy, which is a district-wide language arts program that promotes spelling, reading and writing. This innovative way of teaching these skills promotes individualized instruction, the use of a variety of resources, and integration with other subject areas.

COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY - Comprehensive literacy, a follow-up from Balanced Literacy, is being taught in all of the Division II classes.
